HOW DOES A MOVE TO SPAIN WITH HABERLING WORK?

An international move starts with careful planning. Together, we establish which furniture and personal belongings need to be transported, when you intend to move and which additional services you require.

Step
Description

1. Consultation and assessment

Tell us about your moving plans. We will discuss the collection address in Germany, your new address in Spain, your preferred moving date and the volume of your household belongings.

2. Survey and quote

During an in-person survey or an Online Visit , we assess the volume of your belongings and the local conditions. We then prepare an individual quote based on this information.

3. Preparing for the move

We agree on the arrangements with you. Depending on the services booked, this may include providing packing materials, packing your household belongings and dismantling furniture.

4. Transport to Spain

Your belongings are collected on the agreed date and transported to your new home in Spain according to the planned transport arrangements.

5. Delivery and assembly

Your belongings are unloaded at the destination. If you have booked these services, we can also help with unpacking and assembling your furniture.

For a long-distance move, it is advisable to agree on the desired delivery date well in advance. This makes it easier to coordinate transport, the handover of your property and your move-in date.

WHAT SHOULD I CONSIDER WHEN MOVING TO SPAIN?

A move from Germany to Spain differs from a domestic move in several respects. In addition to the longer transport distance, you should consider your destination region, access to your new home and the practical arrangements required at the other end.

Transport distance and destination address

The distance and logistical requirements vary depending on your collection address in Germany and your destination in Spain. A move to Barcelona involves different arrangements from a transport to Andalusia or the Costa Blanca.

The exact location of your new home is also important. Narrow streets, restricted access, a lack of lifts or long distances between the vehicle and the property can affect the move. Please let us know as early as possible about the conditions at your new address.

Mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands

When planning your move, the exact destination is an important consideration. Transport to mainland Spain involves different logistics from a move to an island.

Moves to the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands may require additional transport stages and transfers. The Canary Islands, as well as the Spanish territories of Ceuta and Melilla, also have a special tax and customs status. The relevant formalities should therefore be clarified individually in advance.

Moving within the European Union

Spain and Germany are both members of the European Union. Ordinary shipments of personal household belongings between the two countries are therefore generally not subject to the traditional customs clearance procedures that apply to moves to non-EU countries.

However, this does not mean that all formalities can be disregarded. Depending on your circumstances, proof of residence, registrations or specific requirements for certain items may be relevant. Different rules may apply to island regions and special territories.

WHICH DOCUMENTS DO I NEED WHEN MOVING TO SPAIN?

The documents you need depend on whether you are moving as a German national, how long you intend to stay in Spain and whether you plan to work there or spend your retirement there.

The following points are particularly relevant when preparing for your move:

Valid identity card or passport:

German nationals can generally enter Spain using a valid national identity card or passport.

Residence and registration:

If you are moving permanently, you should find out about registering at your new address. EU citizens staying in Spain for more than three months are subject to specific registration requirements.

NIE number:

The Número de Identidad de Extranjero is a Spanish identification number for foreign nationals. It may be required for various administrative and financial matters.

Empadronamiento:

Registration in the municipal population register of the relevant local authority may be required if you take up permanent residence in Spain.

Other personal documents:

Depending on your circumstances, employment, insurance, tax or vehicle documents may also be relevant.

When transporting your household belongings, it is advisable to prepare an inventory of the items being moved well in advance. For an ordinary move within the EU, the main focus is on organising the transport. Additional documents may be required for certain goods, vehicles or moves to special tax territories.

Haberling supports you in preparing your international move and provides a checklist with important information. For binding advice on residence rights, registration and tax matters, please contact the relevant Spanish authorities or qualified specialists.

If you wish, we can dismantle your furniture at your current home and reassemble it at your destination. This means you do not have to organise these tasks entirely by yourself.

Your international move can be organised as a door-to-door service. This means that your belongings are collected from your current home and transported to your new address. The specific services included will be set out in your quote.

Interim storage and furniture storage

It is not always possible to move all your furniture directly into your new home. Perhaps your move-in date has not yet been confirmed, or you only want to take some of your household belongings with you. In this case, interim storage or furniture storage with Haberling may be a suitable option.

HOW MUCH DOES A MOVE TO SPAIN COST?

The cost of moving from Germany to Spain depends on the volume of your household belongings, the distance and the services required. A small part-load move is calculated differently from transporting the contents of an entire flat or house.

The following details are particularly important for an accurate estimate:

Area

Volume of belongings

How much furniture, how many boxes and which other items need to be transported?

Collection address in Germany

From which town or address will your move start?

Destination in Spain

Are you moving to Barcelona, Madrid, the Costa del Sol, the Balearic Islands or the Canary Islands?

Accessibility of the properties

Which floor are the properties on? Are lifts, suitable access routes and unloading facilities available?

Additional Services

Do you need a packing service, furniture assembly, packing materials or storage?

Preferred moving date

When do you plan to move, and how flexible are you with the date?

As a general guide, international household moves between Germany and mainland Spain often cost several thousand euros, depending on the volume and scope of services. Smaller shipments may cost less, while large households, extensive additional services or more distant destinations can increase the overall cost. This general market estimate is not a fixed price from Haberling.

Haberling will prepare an individual, non-binding quote based on your specific moving requirements. This gives you a clear estimate tailored to your household and planned move to Spain.
